Summary

InformationCard-C provides a cross-platform C library, allowing consumption of Information Cards by a Relying Party. The library is low-level, meant to be easily adapted to many environments and languages.

This is the first release of the InformationCard-C library.

InformationCard-C is a low-level library for processing of submitted identity information based on the Information Card profile. This library is meant to be used for integration into websites, as well as for integration support for higher-level languages, web servers and application frameworks.

In parallel with this release, SourceID has published a PHP extension leveraging this library, as well as a drupal module integration Single Sign-on and automatic registration into the Drupal CMS system. These are both available for download here.

Description

Windows CardSpace technology is part of the Microsoft initiative for providing secure authentication for the Internet Age. Through the UI paradigm of Information Cards, the user is presented with a simple, consistent way to manage and securely present their identity to various distributed, heterogeneous systems. This is meant to be done as easily as the user presents different forms of authentication from the identification cards on their physical person, and forms an important part of the Identity Metasystem

Within CardSpace there are three software components:

Ping Identity has created a PHP extension to allow the InformationCard-C library to be used from PHP, along with a module for Drupal integration.. Both of these are available for download at SourceId.org.

The identity selector is the technology which presents a Relying Party's desire for digital identity information via a consistent UI, and allows the user to select whether or not they share any particular information with the Relying Party.

Information Cards

Information Cards are an important part of the Identity Metasystem, the conceptual combination of different parties and technologies into a single model for representing and sharing identity information.

An information card itself is a UI representation of an identity; a graphical placeholder representing the availability of information about you and the source of that information. This graphical metaphor is closest to the cards in your wallet, which may get you into a club, check out a book from the library, open electronic doors at the office, or allow you to quickly purchase goods. Your cards are represented by an Identity Selector, which filters out the cards you may have which are inappropriate and lets the user pick what is shared. The actual digital identity is retrieved and shared once the user selects an appropriate card to use.

Types of Identities
There are generally considered to be two different kinds of identities represented by information cards. These are useful for different scenarios.

Self-issued identity, created by a local Identity Provider, allows the user to have cards containing information which you have specified. This is similar to the existing internet registration forms; the information is not supplied by a trusted party, but is potentially verified by the site receiving it.

This is the easiest mode to implement from a business perspective, as it does not require a relationship with another new party

Managed Identity, created by a separate Identity Provider, allows the user to present information from an existing organization. This is similar to existing forms of identification, which rely on an existing trust or relationship with the issuer of the presented card or document.

This is more difficult to implement, as business and technical coordination are required between the party receiving the digital identity and the party issuing it.

Identity Provider

An identity provider is the provider of digital identity information. This is in contrast to a Relying Party, which receives digital identity information.

Types of Identity Providers

Self-Issued Identity Providers, usually built into or coupled with the Identity Selector, allow the user to create, modify, and send information they have specified about themselves. A Relying Party in this case does not use the digital identity due to a relationship with the identity provider, but instead has a relationship directly with the user.
Managed Identity Providers, usually a organization, will empower a user to share digital identity information with a Relying Party, but does not necessarily allow the user to modify their own information. A Relying Party in this case will use the digital identity due to the relationship with the identity provider more than with the user

Relying Party

A relying party asks for digital identity information, and makes the decision whether or not to use digital identity information given to it by an Identity Provider. The type of information desired and needed by a relying party, in addition to the Identity Providers considered acceptable, varies based on the business needs of the relying party.
